A Comparison of Consumer Willingness to Pay for Four Types of Sweeteners AgEcon
Deng, Xueting; Saghaian, Sayed H.; Woods, Timothy A..
As the U.S. consumption of sweeteners has increased, analysis of the demand for sweeteners has become more important. In this paper, consumer willingness-to-pay (WTP) for selected four types of sweeteners is evaluated. The four types of sweeteners are Kentucky grown pure maple syrup, artificially maple flavored syrup, sorghum syrup and molasses. Results suggest that consumers who are at high household income level (above $80,000) and with a smaller household size are likely to pay more for Kentucky grown maple syrup. Results show that there is no statistic difference for the annual household consumption among the four types of sweeteners.

A Risk Analysis of Converting CRP Acres to a Wheat-Sorghum-Fallow Rotation AgEcon
Williams, Jeffery R.; Llewelyn, Richard V.; Pendell, Dustin L.; Schlegel, Alan J.; Troy, Dumler.
This study examines the economic potential of producing a wheat (Triticum aesitivum) and grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) rotation with three different tillage strategies compared to the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) in a semi-arid region. This research uses stochastic efficiency with respect to a function (SERF) to determine the preferred management strategies under various risk preferences and utility-weighted certainty equivalent risk premiums. Yields, input rates, and field operations from an experimental field in western Kansas are used to calculate net returns for each tillage strategy. Although current net returns to crop production using reduced tillage and no-tillage strategies are higher than CRP, risk analysis indicates CRP...

A study of sorghum production potential in the semi-arid tropic of Brazil. Infoteca-e
GARAGORRY, F. L.; PORTO, E. R.; MOITA, A. W.; SILVA, A. de S.; CHAIB FILHO, H..
The paper presents the application of a computerized agroclimatic system to the study ofsorghum production potential in the semi-arid tropic of Brazil. After a brief description of the system, the results obtainae for a sample of counties are discussed. In particular, the paper illustrates the use of clustering techniques in connection to agroclimatic zoning. The use of the system in relation to complementary irrigaton studies is also stressed.

Agrobacterium-mediated transformation of sorghum: factors that affect transformation efficiency Genet. Mol. Biol.
Carvalho,Carlos Henrique S.; Zehr,Usha B.; Gunaratna,Nilupa; Anderson,Joseph; Kononowicz,Halina H.; Hodges,Thomas K.; Axtell,John D..
The results presented in this work support the hypothesis that Agrobacterium-mediated transformation of sorghum is feasible, analogous to what has been demonstrated for other cereals such as rice, maize, barley and wheat. The four factors that we found most influenced transformation were: the sensitivity of immature sorghum embryos to Agrobacterium infection, the growth conditions of the donor plant, type of explant and co-cultivation medium. A major problem during the development of our protocol was a necrotic response which developed in explants after co-cultivation. Immature sorghum embryos proved to be very sensitive to Agrobacterium infection and we found that the level of embryo death after co-cultivation was the limiting step in improving...

Allelopathic Activity of Crop Residue Incorporation Alone or Mixed Against Rice and its Associated Grass Weed Jungle Rice (Echinochloa colona [L.] Link) Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Khaliq,Abdul; Matloob,Amar; Ata Cheema,Zahid; Farooq,Muhammad.
Weed suppression is one of the several benefits achieved by soil incorporation of crop residues and such suppression is believed to be allelopathic in nature. The allelopathic potential of different crop residues: viz. sorghum (Sorghum bicolor [L.] Moench), sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.), brassica (Brassica campestris L.) was evaluated in rice (Oryza sativa L.) and jungle rice (Echinochloa colona [L.] Link). Chopped crop residues were soil-incorporated alone and mixed at 6 g kg-1 soil (12 t ha-1) and compared with a control without residues. Soil incorporation of residues substantially delayed germination of jungle rice. The time to start germination, time to 50% emergence, mean emergence time, emergence index, and final germination percentage were all...
